USING WEBSITES (Lesson Plan)
LESSON #1
- Topic: Social Media, friend or foe?
- Course: 3rd year
- School: Public High School
- Level: Intermediate
- Number of students: 20
- Duration of each class: 40 minutes
- Location: School Facilities / Computer Lab
The T will share a picture containing a big number of apps with the students so as to trigger the discussion on the topic.
_ Are you familiar with these apps? How many of them do you know and use?
_ What comes to mind when you see all these apps?
_ What is your view on social media? Do you think it is good/necessary - bad/unecessary?
_ How often do you use social media? And what about your closest friends, relatives?
_ Which app do you use the most / the least?
The T will write down key words/phrases from students´ answers on the board such as: Technology - Whatsapp - Communication - To have fun - Boring - A lot of Information - Addiction - Instagram (and so forth)

After this, the T will provide sts with two websites for students to read in pairs and to highlight or write down words 1) that they don´t understand 2) that were mentioned in the previous discussion.

The T will tell sts to work with visuwords (and some others) to look for the unknown words and maybe related ones. (The T will give sts from 10 to 15 minutes to do the reading and will help them if necessary)

After this, the T and the whole class will exchange views and the main ideas about the articles and check whether the words on the board previously discussed have a relationship/connection to the them.
What´s next
After the discussion and the sharing of the main ideas/words from the articles, the T will tell students to enter google drive with their e-mail/gmail accounts (if a student doesn´t have one the T will help him/her create one).

Once there, the T will ask 3 different sts to create 3 Gdocs and share them with their partners. Each of the Gdocs will be assigned a specific name:
1_ Vocabulary from the articles
2_ Effects of social media on people (Madonna´s article)
3_ Social Media ¿Friend or Foe? (Article from cyberadio)
Then, half of the class will be in charge of producing a summary with the main ideas, tips or pieces of advice on Gdoc number 2 and the other half will do the same with Gdoc number 3.
The whole class will be in charge of uploading the vocabulary that they looked up on visuwords (or any other) during the class for further use.
_ These documents will have to be shared with the teacher as well and will be used later on.
To conclude, sts will work on an activity dessigned by the teacher. (If time runs out, sts will complete the activity as homework or at the begining of next class)

Warmer
The T will show sts a short video about the possible risks of posting personal information/data on the web. Then, there will be a discussion on the most important points and the T will relate this to the content of this class and also the previous one.

_ Apart from Facebook, what are the other social networks mentioned?
_ Why can it be risky to post personal videos, pictures or data on the web?
_ If you post something and then you delete it, is it still possible for somebody else to have that information?

Now, the T will provide sts with two articles that will have to be read in pairs. Meanwhile, the T will create Gdocs number 4 and 5:
4_ Who uses social media in Argentina?
5_ The biggest social media types of 2019
_ Following the same path of the previous class, half of the class will be working on article 4 and the other half on article 5.
_ At the same time, sts will have to add the unknown words to the vocabulary Gdoc (1).

_ After this, as the sts will have contributed in the gdocs and read the short articles, the T will ask them to post a comment on twitter emphasizing something they learnt or caught their attention during the lessons. (They can choose to write tips, a piece of advice, reccomendations, a personal opinion, and so forth)
What´s next
_ So as to conclude the project, the sts will be divided into 4 groups and will be assigned 4 different topics to work on:
- GROUP 1: The Most Popular Social Media Sites
- GROUP 2: Social Media, friend or foe? Good or bad?
- GROUP 3: Is Social Media Healthy or Unhealthy?
- GROUP 4: Who uses social media the most?
_ Make presenations with the information from the gdocs (they can add more information from other sources too)
_ Share their online content not only with other classmates but also with their friends, relatives, teachers, etc.
_ Produce a poster board with the most prominent information they have found about their topics. (They can stick these posters in the school walls or in their own classroom)
